What is Affiliate Marketing?

Affiliate marketing is the hosting of links, banners, and product information on a website or blog and then getting paid a flat fee or percentage of a sale whenever visitors click through on these links and make a purchase. In essence, affiliate marketing is selling products or services offered by others and then getting paid for each sale. In addition to affiliating with a single vendor, there are affiliate marketing networks, such as Commission Junction, and Rakuten, which will provide a variety of sites with which you can affiliate.

Making Money with Affiliate Marketing

While not everyone succeeds in making significant amounts of money with affiliate marketing, those who are very knowledgeable do, and it has allowed them to grow their online businesses into significant money makers with essentially no customers in the traditional sense of the word in a marketplace that is never closed.

The key to affiliate marketing is to select products that would be attractive to the visitors to your website. This is an entrepreneurship website, so the first three amazon ads lead to books related to that topic. The last links to various other business books.

Of course, what you make is contingent on how much traffic you drive to your site. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is an important technique. Many site editors also make liberal use of social media.

The Amazon affiliate program is an example of a pay-per-sale arrangement. In this arrangement, the merchant site pays an affiliate when the affiliate sends them a customer who purchases something. Amazon does all the accounting, paying the affiliate a percentage of the sale.

See the left side of this text for what an Amazon program looks like on a website. Amazon, like most affiliates, provides the HTML coding for you to insert on your pages. On the right side of this text, see also affiliate programs for Brandcaster and eBay.
